Conrad Richter papers, 1849-1995 (bulk 1903-1968).

The bulk of this collection contains manuscript drafts, galleys, and page proofs for ten published novels (Always young and fair, The Aristocrat, A Country of strangers, The Free man, The Grandfathers, The Light in the forest, The Mountain on the desert, Over the blue mountain, A Simple honorable man, The Waters of kronos), one unpublished novel (The Gift), and a story treatment for MGM Studios of "Benefits forgot" by Honoré Morrow. Includes drafts and notes for eighteen short stories, ideas and notes for stories; ten essays. Also, correspondence, mostly with Karl Goedecke, 1943-1968, Richter's long-term book seller; diaries, "The Record of a Failure," written during the Depression, 1930-1933; and several research notebooks containing photos, articles, letters, notes, story outlines, and character sketches; and other miscellaneous items (photos of people Richter admired; his obituary and one for his wife, Harvena A. Richter; and early high school programs). Includes a carbon typescript and holograph of Robert W. Chambers' The Ghost of a Chance.
